I always thought that mithridatism referred to the practice of building up a tolerance to a specific poison by successive ingestion of larger and larger doses.
Fortunately I have no need to stand in line at the apothecary's -- I just look to Boris and Natasha** to provide me with bezoars as needed.
** who naturally feast on a diet of unripe persimmons.

But it does! This is the part about confectio Damocritis that puts me in constant peril of self muttering. The story about Mithridates and royal intrigue is so Princess-Bridey that it stuck in my head, but a mithridate is different--it's a substance, not a clever practice. Both were reputedly created by that same clever man, but I find it strange--if you thought you had a universal cure for poison, why would you bother ingesting small quantities of the specific poisons you're worried about?
And who was this Damocritis anyway?
*mutter, mutter*
